Because of her extreme weight, she was having a great many medical complications relating to digestion including chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, gallstones, heartburn and allergies.

Because she is such a strong willed woman, Gabourey decided that it was important to lose weight while still being able to do the things she loved to do and that is why she decided to go under the knife. She accomplished one day per week of gastric bypass surgery burn calories and at the same time exercise. Through this she was able to not only lose weight, but also maintain the body she had before. She credits her amazing feat to the combined effects of exercise, yoga, and bariatric surgery.

When asked what foods she likes to eat during the week, Gabourey mentions pizza and chicken Parmesan. When asked if she eats any kind of cooked meat such as steak, ribs, or skinless chicken breast, Gabourey responds that she doesn't because she is afraid she might get cancer from eating too much cooked meat. However, on the day that we met she went into the health food store and began purchasing various meats to cook for our family meal that evening. After preparing the meals, she went back to her hotel room and prepared two large meals for us that night. When asked if she thought that she could lose weight that easily at her own pace, she responded that she thinks so, and with good reason. She had started consuming smaller plates throughout the day, eating small amounts of different foods at each meal, along with having a protein drink before going to bed.

At the beginning of our conversation, Gabourey shared with us that she was once again exercising, and that she felt much better after completing her weight loss surgery. She was surprised by how quickly she was able to bounce back from mastectomy to a regular lifestyle. While she experienced some side effects to her surgical procedure, like nausea, she didn't have any lasting long-term effects.
